May 2, 2013 — THE GLADIATORS GET CLOSER TO LEARNING THE IDENTITY OF THE MOLE — ON ABC’S “SCANDAL” (courtesy of ABC Media Relations)
Tony Goldwyn Directs
SCANDAL – “A Woman Scorned” – The team continues their investigation into the mole and make a shocking discovery in the process. Meanwhile, Fitz orders Jake to continue to protect Olivia, who is still very much in danger, and back at the White House Mellie’s ultimatum forces Cyrus into the role “fixer,” on “Scandal,” THURSDAY, MAY 2 (10:02-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.
“Scandal” is created by Shonda Rhimes (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Private Practice”). Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Private Practice”) are executive producers. Judy Smith is co-executive producer. “Scandal” is produced by ABC Studios.
February 9, 2013 — TVLine.com has added a new weekly feature in which they select a series’ actor for their shining star performance dubbed ‘Performer of the Week’. This week’s selection is ABC’s Scandal’s Jeff Perry who plays White House Chief of Staff, Cyrus Beene.
Performer of the Week: Jeff Perry (Week of February 4, 2013) (courtesy of TV Line)
THE PERFORMER | Jeff Perry
THE SHOW | Scandal (ABC)
THE EPISODE | “Nobody Likes Babies”
THE AIRDATE | February 7, 2013
THE PERFORMANCE | It was the roar of a political lion as much as it was a confession. Having worked so hard to cover his tracks, yet compelled to lie not once more to the husband who loves him, chief of staff Cyrus Rutherford Beene bared all after having bared all: “I stole… the White House!”
The way those five words came out of his mouth were half-eruption, half-escape. Mostly pride, but maybe for the first time laced with shame. As James began to process the truth he feared confirmed, Cyrus sat down, no longer able to stand quite as tall. “I wasn’t made to be chief of staff… I was made to be the President of the United States. I was made to lead the nation,” he started his defense. “I would have been great at that! I have stones, I have the backbone, I have the will.” And we, having seen all that Cyrus is capable of (RIP, Amanda), can attest to that. However: “I’m fairly short, and I’m not so pretty,” he acknowledged. “And I really like having sex with men.”
As such, Cyrus settled to “be the guy behind the President of the United States,” where his work will never get his name on a library but instead earn him a nice, “respectful” life and a gig at the Ivy League school of his choice. “Fitzgerald Grant was my shot” to breathe “the rarest of air,” Cyrus explained, his eyes wetting as his mind raced up and down the path he took, the sordid steps taken, “and when your shot comes, you either take it or you lose. And I already lost enough…. I took my shot.”
And given the thrilling TV ride that ensued, we’re glad he did. (Rewatch the scene here at Hulu, starting at the 15:14 mark.)
February 9, 2013 — Since season 1 of ABC’s Scandal, cast members and fans known as GLADIATORS have participated with Live Tweet sessions each Thursday night during the East and West Coast airings of the hit show. Now midway through the sophomore season, the GLADIATOR Tweet Parties have only gotten bigger!
The Hollywood Reporter’s Lesley Goldberg reports on the #AskScandal Tweetland phenomenon on Thursday nights and the 2,200 tweets per minute the Gladiators are sending!
How ABC’s ‘Scandal’ Gets 2,200 Tweets Per Minute
The stars of Shonda Rhimes’ drama, including Kerry Washington, help generate five trending topics as episodes air — and ratings are up this season.
ABC’s Scandal is experiencing a sophomore growth spurt — and Twitter might be the reason.
Shonda Rhimes’ drama, starring Kerry Washington as a D.C. political fixer, has taken over the social media platform every Thursday this season, with the Jan. 31 episode generating more than 2,200 tweets a minute and five worldwide trending topics. The entire cast has contributed to the effort, live-tweeting during episodes using the #AskScandal hashtag and generating such story-driven tags as #WhoShotFitz and #WhatTheHuck.
“Everybody is super-involved and willing to do whatever it takes to make this show work,” Rhimes tells THR. “People heard about the show from other people — Oprah Winfrey heard about it from Twitter — and that got other people watching. That really helped us.”
The strategy is working: Original episodes of Scandal are averaging a 3.1 rating this season, up 19 percent in the key adults 18-to-49 demographic, en route to overtaking CBS’ Elementary at 10 p.m. Thursdays. And the trajectory is upward: The Jan. 31 episode delivered its best retention of lead-in Grey’s Anatomy to date, holding 96 percent in the 18-to-49 metric as it threatens to surpass Rhimes’ longtime ratings champ.
ABC, meanwhile, has fully embraced the Twitter strategy, promoting the #AskScandal phenomenon into its on-air promos (below) for the drama. Click here to view the on-air promo video.

January 17, 2013 — TV Line’s Michael Ausiello went to great lengths to score these 7 spoilers during the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. So I guess we can forgive him for snagging a photo with the POTUS – even though most GLADIATORS would kill to be in his shoes! Check out the spoilers below:
A ‘CRIMINAL’ SNEAK | The assembled press screened next week’s fantastic outing, ”A Criminal, a Whore, an Idiot and a Liar,” which answers (via flashback) one of the biggest questions hanging over this season.
BOMBSHELL | A top-secret development in next week’s ep puts Fitz “in a hopeful, excited place where he thinks that anything is possible,” shared Rhimes. “Whether or not he continues to believe anything is possible remains to be seen.”
REWIND | An upcoming episode will reveal “pieces of the flashback [puzzle] that involve Quinn.” (Click here for more on that.)
D-DAY IS IMMINENT | Teased Rhimes of Mellie’s impending bundle of joy: “America’s Baby is coming sooner than you think.”
ALL IN THE FAMILY | Rhimes confirmed that viewers will “eventually meet” Fitz and Mellie’s teenage son and daughter (who are currently holed up at boarding school). “It will be interesting to see [Fitz] as a father,” she added. “In the beginning, we didn’t see them because I was worried that if you saw him with his children you would really hate Olivia for having an affair with him. Now I’m no longer concerned about that. You’re rooting for them to be together no matter what.” Rhimes also explained, “I didn’t want to do a bunch of stories about Fitz talking to a 12-year-old girl. That was not my plan… yet. That’s not to say we don’t have plans for that happening in the future.”
THE TRUTH IS (ALMOST) OUT | Rhimes strongly hinted that Olivia would soon come clean to Quinn about her “origin.” “I think eventually there’s going to come a time for Olivia where not telling the truth is going to become more of a burden than telling the truth.”
THE BIG ONE | “There’s really interesting stuff coming with James and Cyrus,” shared Rhimes of the show’s somewhat happily-married gay couple, adding, “One of my favorite scenes I’ve ever written in my entire life is coming up with James and Cyrus. And it’s a BIG one. A lot is revealed.”
January 17, 2012 — Members of the ‘Scandal’ cast took some time during the 2013 Winter TC Press Tour to chat with E! Online about what GLADIATORS can expect in the coming episodes. Check out the interviews with Bellamy Young, Darby Stanchfield, Jeff Perry, Joshua Malina and Guillermo Diaz by clicking here.
January 17, 2012 — Deadline Hollywood spoke with ‘Scandal’ series creator and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes during ABC’s portion of the 2013 TCA Press Tour. Rhimes told Deadline Hollywood that the series would continue with the same format for the second half of the sophomore season featuring a “case of the week but then ramp up to the larger story we’re telling.”
January 10, 2013 — TV Line’s ‘Ask Ausiello’ offered the following response when asked for a ‘Scandal Scoop’
Question: Oh, great TV guru, I’m in dire need for some Scandal scoop. I’ll send you some delicious Costa Rican coffee if you answer me. —Mateo
Ausiello: Rumor has it the Grim Reaper’s about to make a cameo. (And I’ll see your Costa Rican coffee, and raise you a case of Diet Coke.)
January 10, 2013 — TV Line announces casting updates for the sophomore season of ABC’s Scandal:
Barry Bostwick tapped to play POTUS Papa
Scandal fans, prepare to meet POTUS’ pop.
TVLine has learned exclusively that onetime Spin City mayor Barry Bostwick will play President Fitzgerald Grant’s father.
“Big Jerry,” as he is known, is described as both funny and overbearing, and was a political player in his day as well.
Bostwick will appear in Season 2, Episode 11, airing Thursday, Jan. 17.
The actor’s more recent TV credits include The New Normal, Hot in Cleveland, Cougar Town and Glee (where his cameo served as a wink-wink nod to his role in the cult film The Rocky Horror Picture Show).
Katie Lowe’s husband, Adam Shapiro scheduled to appear as Quinnsey’s boyfriend, Jesse Tyler
Art will kinda sorta (but hopefully not too much!) imitate life when Scandal cast member Katie Lowes‘ actor-husband shows up on ABC’s buzzy sophomore drama as a very important man from Quinn’s past.
Adam Shapiro, whose TV credits include Grey’s Anatomy‘s gunman-in-the-hospital two-parter and a recurring role on NBC’s new White House comedy 1600 Penn, will guest-star in at least one episode of Scandal as Lindsay Dwyer’s doomed boyfriend Jesse.
As Scandalistas know, Jesse was among the several Cytron employees killed years ago by the bomb that Lindsay was accused of mailing. As such, expect to see Shapiro in flashbacks that shed light on the couple’s happier times and the fateful frame job that robbed Lindsay of love but gave “Quinn Perkins” a second chance at life.
“Working with Adam was totally surreal and wonderful!” Lowes tells TVLine of the wink-wink casting. “We’ve done tons of theatre together over the years, but never anything like this. Plus, he might be the biggest Scandal fan ever himself, so he was jumping around like a five-year-old when he booked the part.”
Hopefully (though improbably), the marrieds’ loved ones will somehow never lay eyes on this TVLine story. “We are keeping it a secret from our families who all watch the show religiously,” she says, “so when Adam first pops up on-screen as Quinn’s boyfriend, our mothers are going to freak out!”
Scandal resumes Season 2 next Thursday, Jan. 10, with Episode 10; Shapiro debuts in Episode 12.
