Tony Goldwyn has completed the Shondaland trifecta. The actor has been tapped to direct an upcoming episode of Shonda Rhimes‘ Scandal, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
Goldwyn stars as President Fitzgerald Grant on the Kerry Washington political fixer thriller, marking the first time the actor-director-producer has stepped behind the camera of a series in which he stars.
“Directing a show that I have been a part of from the beginning is going to be a new experience,” Goldwyn tells THR. “This company is so close. To work intimately with them all in a different way really excites me. The best part will be entering the world of Olivia Pope & Associates, which Fitz is pretty much walled off from.”
The effort gives him a clean sweep behind the camera of all three of Rhimes’ current ABC dramas, having previously directed two episodes of Grey’s Anatomy and a 2007 hour of Private Practice.
In addition to his acting and directing duties on Scandal, Goldwyn most directed and executive produced the pilot for AMC’s untitled legal drama with Richard LaGravenese.
An airdate, episode number or title for Goldwyn’s Scandal directing debut has not yet been determined.
Repped by CAA, Untitled and Schreck Rose, Goldwyn’s directing credits also include features A Walk on the Moon, Conviction and The Last Kiss as well as episodes of Justified, Dexter and The L Word.
